Our History
Community Nursery School of Wayland’s history dates back to 1965, making it one of the first preschools in Wayland. Roberta Wambolt established the preschool back in 1965 with a group of other mothers who were looking for someplace to educate and socialize their toddlers. Of the original group, she’s the only one still there.
The school is located adjacent to the Community Methodist Church off Damon Street in Cochituate, but it has no official link with the house of worship. In 1965, CNS opened it’s doors with 50 students. When the school opened there weren’t many nursery schools in town. And the rooms in the church were vacant except for Sunday school classes. The minister Bob Jones had started a nursery school at his previous church in Sudbury, so it was natural to open a preschool at the church in Wayland.
Today, CNS has programs serving children ages 2.9 years through 5 years. The school’s purpose and philosophy remain the same: CNS is committed to providing a warm, nurturing, supportive environment that enables the young children in our care to develop to the very best of their potential.
